Shomrei Adamah of Greater Washington

Our Vision

The Chesapeake region Jewish community embraces ecological wisdom, awareness and action.

Our Mission

To build Jewish community centered around celebration, inspired by the ecological wisdom of our tradition.

To be a Jewish voice and presence for environmental justice and social change in the Chesapeake region.

History

Shomrei Adamah of Greater Washington was founded nearly 20 years ago on Earth Day 1990. Among the original founders were long time DC activists Mike Tabor and De Herman, both of whom are still an integral part of the organization.

During the 1990s, Shomrei Adamah participated in many local and national environmental campaigns, published a guide for greening synagogues and hosted plenty of lectures. Most of the group’s work however involved organizing holiday celebrations with an environmental twist.

Shomrei Adamah led scores of Jewish holiday celebration during the past two decades. At each celebration the group pointed out the environmental meaning of the holiday. The events, particularly our Tu B’shevat seders and Hanukah celebrations, were consistently popular.

As the organization grew, we installed our first executive board in the summer of 2000 and hired our first paid staff in the winter of 2007.

In 2007, we received grants from Hazon and the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington to support our programs and launch our website. With these two grants and the support of many volunteers, we launched GreenLight: A Sustainable Hanukah Celebration, followed by our Tu B’Shvat seder and several other programs over the past year. Historical Note: Ellen Bernstein founded Shomrei Adamah in 1988, which spawned 10 chapters across the U.S. including our organization, which remains in name and spirit of the original founder today. For a complete history, please visit www.ellenbernstein.org
